| 34220 | 2002-02-04 03:19:00 | Hello, I just have a query about Red Hat 6.2 (with Gnome Workstation) and my S3 ViRGE. When I login to 'root' at the prompt I can do that fine. but when i type 'startx' it does it's thing, changes display modes, as if it is starting, but then quits back to a prompt. It displays a list of things about the graphics card, such as refresh rate, color depth and underneath that it says There is no definition mode named '800x600' Fatal server error: No valid modes found ---- And idea what the error is? And if it is the video card, any idea how to fix without upgrading to version 7? Thanks, Matt |

It will be on your CD (in the RedHat/RPMS/ directory). The Getting Started manual on the CD should help ... Also check the HOWTOs : XWindow-User-HOWTO gives some links for more information. The configuration programme is a bit messy, but eventually you get it right. It creates/modifies a file called XF86config which you will find in the /usr/X11R?/tree. The config programme is somewhere in there too -- can't think of its name off hand. Hint: if you haven't got 'mc' installed, get it off the CD and use it to browse the system. I find it nicer than a GUI anyway. |

| 34224 | 2002-02-04 04:17:00 | Hi Graham, Thanks for the help, I had a look though the getting started guide last night, but I couldnt find anything there there to help. And I had another look today. I still couldntnt find. When running through the install, it detected the card as a ViRGE, so I'm asuming that is ok? And do you know where there is a walkthrough for configuring X-Window 'server'? Thanks, Matt |

Then type 'setup' and choose 'Xconfiguration' from the menu. Follow through the options choosing ones appropriate for your PC. Some S3 cards can be a problem - if you have no luck with the above then search the net for possible problems and workarounds. |

| 34226 | 2002-02-04 10:00:00 | Hey guys, Thanks for the help. I got it all going - well, kind of. I deleted the image and reinstalled, and changed the video card from 'S3 ViRGE' > 'S3 ViRGE DX', set the resolution to 640x480 and 8-bit and turned on 'Use graphical login screen'. So now it's all up and going, I'm wondering how I can can the resolution and color depth. I spent ages looking around in KDE and in Gnome - which are both very difficult because most of the buttons are off the screen due to it's small size. Thanks again, Matt |
