34214 2002-02-04 03:23:00 Greetings.

I am using win98se. My desktop icons are fine after a reboot but then after an hour or so some of them swap there graphics with others. For example, a text file might have the icon of a zip file. This is completely random too - I look at my desktop and and ask myself 'what ya choice of look to day my crazy little icons'

what can i do??

Try updating your virus definitions and doing a full virus scan.

34216 2002-02-04 05:04:00 Graham is probably correct that it's virus activity. It may also be a result of 'gag' software installed by someone with a sense of humour and access to your PC.

If you're worried, check out one of the many websites that specialise in databases of viruses and Trojans and key in 'icon switching' into their search engine. Should bring up a selection of possible culprits and also give advice on how to remove it.

That's the best advice 'icon' give you, I'm afraid.

34217 2002-02-04 05:04:00 Yep, you have a virus....sorry I forget the name but it is one of the recent ones that has done the rounds. I suggest you go to www.symantec.com and run their remote virus scan. It'll give you the details etc and they have full removal instructions and possibly even a removal tool there as well. Guest (0)
34218 2002-02-04 06:09:00 If your desktop icons have become corrupted, you may be able to correct the problem by deleting ShellIconCache from your Windows Directory. See Q133733 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base 'Icons Displayed Incorrectly in Control Panel'. Guest (0)
