34712 2002-02-07 02:02:00 Hi folks,

I have just had a very interesting conversation with Symantec in Australia.

I wanted to renew my subscription to Nortons Live Updates.... and was completely taken aback by what I consider to be downright 'highway robbery'

To re-subscribe it would cost me approx $25 (if I had purchased NAV 2001 seperate from the computer) but as I had purchased my computer with NAV 2001 installed, I am up for approx $55.

What gives here. I consider being charged $55 - for a years subscription renewal - as bordering on being ripped off. Symantecs reasoning is that it was a 'FREE' software. Well fooey for them.. I am sure that the price that HP paid for its OEM license was passed onto me when I brought the computer.

Finally, I was offered a whole new NAV 2002 package for $90. WOW!

Cheers, RINGO

P/S: When are we going to get the account from MS, when our free years 'trial' of XP expires

34713 2002-02-07 03:08:00 You think YOU'VE got problems. A few years back Microsoft sent me into a blind rage.

I was trying to install Personal Web Server and it came up with error messages. Because my OS was OEM they refused support unless I paid for it. Told me to go back to my supplier (I'd already asked him and he didn't know).

So much for my hundreds of dollars of product purchases over the years and my first help desk call.

I reformatted, reinstalled and reduced my purchases of their products.

34714 2002-02-07 03:50:00 yep pretty standard tactic these days. customers what cheap pc so they give them software at a very very good price, subscription runs out in a month then symantec get their money back when they buy the subcription.

thats why i like to buy full version software even at its rather high price. with a few tricks done it works out cheaper in the long run.

with MS you just have to wait till the hardrive dies out of warranty (restore partion) or you upgrade/swap a lot of componats in/out.

o i just love sales tactics *cough*cough* ;-)

34715 2002-02-07 06:13:00 you can get Symantec trial products 'free' with certain magazines.

Norton Antivirus 2002 came with November Internet Magazine.

I do not think H P paid much, and the renewal is actually a bargain.

We are strong on indignation but not so wonderful on facts.

I find this trend in this column prevalent, there is no free lunch.

34716 2002-02-07 07:43:00 Get rid of it and install AVG. In my opinion their programmes are more trouble than their worth.
Bye

34717 2002-02-08 09:04:00 tweak'e, if you buy full versions of your software, then what do you do when you purchase your PCs?

From what I gather you build your own machines, so do you get your parts cheaper if you decline the 'free' software that some parts come with, or do you accept them and not use them, but go and buy the full version? And what about Windows?

34718 2002-02-10 05:34:00 i have found that OEM versions of nortons antivirus if registed and renewed over the internet are only about $25.00 to renew. try doing it that way.
my beef with them was i had an OEM 2001 version and renewed several weeks before expiry. then i installed win XP and had to buy norton AV 2002. a years free definitions came with it but even though i had not even cut into my 2001 sub...no refund. IE i paid twice.
