34591 2002-02-06 06:02:00 Ive been trying to get an old computer going so i can set up smoothwall (a free linux based firewall). I think everythings as it should be, but when i startup it says 'Remove disk or other media, press any key to restart' pressing any key just gets me the same message. I tried the hard drive in another computer and it worked fine, I tried plugging in a different cd-rom which didnt help either. The hard drive is formatted as Fat (not fat32) and is 1.58 gigs. I dont have a 3.5inch disk drive plugged into the machine. I have a bootable cd for installing the forewall. Any ideas anyone? Guest (0)
34592 2002-02-06 07:09:00 Hey Robert,

Sounds like the bios of your computer is doing this.

The bios may not support booting from CD or the Hard drive parameters set on the computer that worked fine for it.

Try updating the bios.

34593 2002-02-06 11:58:00 well thanks for the reply. Ive tried a bunch more things. I hooked up a 3.5 inch disk drive and ran the win98 boot disk, which worked. I ran fdisk /mbr and format c: now when i try and run it i get the error message 'Invalid System Disk'.

though you may be right about the bios, it does include cd-rom in its options for boot drives. Ill try and find a web site for the motherboard manufacturer.

34594 2002-02-06 20:14:00 It is probably set to 'search for floppy' on start up as well, which would interfere if there is no floppy? Guest (0)
34595 2002-02-12 07:02:00 thanks all for the input. I got it working now. I actually updated the BIOS and checked the settings in it.

I got smoothwall installed, a very cool piece of software. Now im secure with my own firewall!
