| 34601 | 2002-02-06 08:19:00 | Hi there everyone, I'm currently in the process of investigating how best to setup a Linux server which will not only host a variety of websites, but also host a networks connection to the internet. Questions: 1) Linux Mandrake 8.1 - Will that do? 2) Jetstart - Dynamic IP - can I just use something like DNS2GO to redirect my IP to my domain name - or does Linux/the Linux community provide a better tool/service? 3)I want to have this machine secure, but also able to transparently share the internet to three Windows computers on a windows workgroup - how do I go about this? These questions will do for the time being - I'm still downloading Mandrake 8.1, and still aquiring hardware for the server box. Thanks in advance, Jonathan Giles |

Mandrake 8.1 should do all you want and more ... you'll need to spend some time learning how to configure your web server if you want to host multiple sites though. There are several services that will map a domain name to a dynamic IP ... haven't tried any myself though. To let other computers on your LAN share your connection, you need to set up TCP/IP on each PC (or set up DHCPD) with the IP of the server as the GATEWAY on the windows boxes. You will also want to set up your firewall to allow connections from those boxes to your server, and allow IP Forwarding. Best place to go for docs would be www.linuxdoc.org & check out the HOWTO's. |
