34899 2002-02-08 09:34:00 I have heard that files are still resident on the computer even after they have been deleted. If I have accidentally deleted files and folders - they have not gone to the recycle bin so I can double check, just disappeared - how do I retrieve them from those 'secret' places? Guest (0)

There is no 'secret' place that Windows sends deleted files, in simple terms the delete process just alters the file name and location data so that its space can be overwritten by new files.

Until overwritten, the file can be recovered using Norton Utilities. This will run off the CD to avoid having to install the program (which might overwrite the disk space holding the files you want to recover.

If you deleted files using the normal Windows delete function they should appear in the recycle bin, however a common reason for apparently 'lost' files files is saving them in the wrong directory, or as I seem to do all too often, forgetting to enter the file extension (the three letters that come after the filename as in [filename].xxx when renaming files in Explorer.

If you might have left off the file extension, you can often find it quickly by selecting 'all file types' in the appropriate box when selecting the file you want and look for the file name without an extension.

Otherwise, to find lost files, select Start/Find/Files or Folder and enter [filename].* then select the disk you want to search.

If you can't remember the filename, enter *.* in the 'Named' box and a keyword in the 'containing text' box.

Once found, resave into the correct folder, and if the file extension was left off, make sure you either 'save as' to restore the file type or rename the file with the correct extension.
