34824 2002-02-07 21:51:00 Could someone please tell me the difference between a modem cable and a telephone cable. There is an indepth discussion going on at work. I am sure there is a difference. Please help.... Guest (0)
34825 2002-02-07 22:37:00 Are you meaning the cord from the modem to the socket vs the phone to the socket? If so, there's no difference - they're interchangeable. Guest (0)
34826 2002-02-07 22:41:00 I would say
the Modem cable went between the Computer and the Modem - usually plugs into COMx ports with a DB9 or DB25 plug. Only required for External Modems.

The Telephone cable goes between the Modem and the phone jack on the wall. Usually a 6 core cable which has a BT plug in the wall socket end and a RJ45 or similar plug on the modem end. Required both internal and external modems.

34827 2002-02-07 22:56:00 just to add to mike there are some phones whose cable (us-bt) cannot be used on other phones, modems, etc as the us jack is wired differently. don't ask me why but some are. Guest (0)
34828 2002-02-07 23:55:00 During my old days on the helpdesk of an ISP a problem could often be impossible to diagnose, but sometimes getting them to swap a phone cable to a proper modem cable worked wonders! Guest (0)
34829 2002-02-08 00:16:00 My experience is that some phonecables are wired 2&5 with a BT plug and that others (reverse wired!) are 5&2. I think a trip to the warehouse will demo this, I am in UK now and needed a reverse wired plug..... however I don't regard this as a modem cable, I think that is dealt with above for an external modem?? cheers Guest (0)
