1290569 2012-07-24 19:58:00 Anyone here a member of eBay; or ever looked at becoming a member

I am looking into joining; and am looking for user experiences to do with eBay.

I have heard some good things and bad things about it (likewise TradeMe too). How do you find eBay?
Any catches or things to look for?

Cheers

1290570 2012-07-24 20:07:00 We use ebay, its a really good site to find all the stuff you need (because sometimes it not available in nz). I find reading the sellers reviews gives you a good estimation of the quality of service you might get.

You will have to watch out for PayPal if you dont have one as alot of the sellers only allow PayPal purchases.

Also when you create your account, you can use it at any of the ebay websites (because different sellers post on different sites).

Finally postage, most sellers ship to nz but you will find the occasional seller doesnt like shipping overseas which can become a hassle if the price is quite a bit lower, but also watch out for the shipping prices as something that can look cheaper without shipping could potentially cost $20-$30 more with it, so in the filter tab just select 'price + postage lowest first'.

All in all ebay is quite a good thing to set up, just watch out for the dodgy sellers who advertise item wrong;)

1290571 2012-07-24 21:05:00 I am a member myself. It will take a while to work out the culture and how to interpret seller's intentions and how things work. The Error Guy (14052)
1290572 2012-07-24 21:38:00 I've used it when I was in Aussie, I consider it a bit of a pig.

Search is poor,Better off drilling down through each category rather then doing a search and then click back to the relevant category as you can do with trademe.

It also muddies the results with crap from different countries so you need to keep an eye on that.

1290573 2012-07-24 21:47:00 Customer Support is horrible. Read their community boards, really eye opening. It's all about the buyer there now, they don't care about the seller (who can't even leave negative feedback to buyers). Renegade (16270)
1290574 2012-07-24 22:35:00 Have used both epay and paypal for several years.

No issues with either :)

A great way to buy.

Beats the snot out of trademe.

Beats the snot out of trademe.+1. Been a member of ebay since 2003 and paypal even earlier. Never had an issue with either of them.

1290576 2012-07-24 23:05:00 I joined ebay recently upon being told by sony NZ that I couldn't get a part for my headphones. I google search pointed me to ebay, where on the train, I signed up, downloaded the app, bought the part (paid through my existing paypal account) and had it delivered the next week.

FU sony!!

I'd imagine you could have some pretty bad experiences on there as well, I was just lucky.

1290577 2012-07-24 23:09:00 Ebay works in the buyers favour whereas Trade Me works for the seller by extending the latest bid time :( Zippity (58)
1290578 2012-07-24 23:10:00 Paypal sting on the conversion rate, Pretty sure they just pull something out of their backside and you have to live with it no matter what the going rate really is. Metla (12)
