1290208 2012-07-23 09:08:00 Have a Dell 2.4 GHz, 1 GB Ram 80 GB HD Which i no longer use.
Just for fun I would like to set it up as a server.
Have looked on the net and see that there are plenty of free server programs available.
Any recommendations with considerations to ease of set up and use?

1290209 2012-07-23 09:12:00 What do you want the server for? stratex5 (16685)
1290210 2012-07-23 09:27:00 Back ups, Pics, Movies, Music, Software etc
Size is not a problem as have 1 TB drive I can fit if I successfully set it up.

1290211 2012-07-23 09:44:00 XAMPP is a good web server if that's what you're after

Otherwise just a bog-standard OS will do the job, although probably not quite as well as a specialised OS.

1290215 2012-07-24 00:21:00 Thanks Sol. confirms what I thought when I read about setting it up. Seems a bit to complex for me. Looking at Debian. I might be wrong but I think it is similar to Ubantu but easier to set up. Colpol (444)
1290216 2012-07-24 02:27:00 Freenas (www.freenas.org) would be great on that machine. All you need is a 4GB USB Flash drive for the OS and the 1TB can be storage and use the rock solid ZFS file system tmrafi (5179)
1290217 2012-07-24 05:47:00 Amahi (www.amahi.org) I'm using Amahi, works well, is free, runs headless, was even relativity easy to set up. But I can't get the vpn to work gary67 (56)
