1290181 2012-07-23 06:37:00 So, our hard drive died in the old PC that we have been using mainly just to browse the web, which gives me the perfect excuse to upgrade.

So, the only things that I'll be using from the parts that I have is a case, a sound card, a PSU, and a DVD writer. Budget is $500 (which needs to include the OS).

Now I know $500 isn't going to get me the world and my expectations aren't over the top. I just want a good platform that I will be able to upgrade as money allows. I realize that this will mean starting off without a video card, which is fine. In the future I'd like to be able to edit HD movies (we currently have a camera that records AVCHD Lite 720P video), but to start with it would just be basic web browsing and probably some picture editing.

I haven't brought PC components for years, so I'm really out of the loop.

I would really appreciate your feedback and suggestions.

TIA.

1290184 2012-07-23 06:44:00 You'll probably want to replace that once or if you get a dedicated card. icow (15313)

1290186 2012-07-23 06:55:00 Something like the intel one if you're wanting to upgrade, if you want to have a GPU now you could drop the CPU back to an i3 2100 and get something like a 7750. Or you could get anything on AMD's FM1 platform probably a bit cheaper giving you a decent IGP, depending on the software you use and if you are going to be heavily transcoding you could find an AMD system to be a tad weaker/slower in the transcoding department. HDD's are also retardly expensive so you could swap the HDD out for a 60gb Intel SSD or a 64gb M4 to bump up performance, will lower your storage capabilities though. If you went the FM1 route you could also consider using an FX-4100 and an AM3+ motherboard, would probably be more powerful in the long run. icow (15313)
1290187 2012-07-23 22:54:00 You could probably get Intel SB platform under $500... SolMiester (139)
1290188 2012-07-24 00:39:00 Crap I forgot the OS. I think you're looking at around $75? For an OEM copy of 7. icow (15313)
1290189 2012-07-24 00:43:00 Isn't it closer to $170?

Failing that, temporarily pirate it? Or use linux for a bit?
