| 1289778 | 2012-07-21 01:46:00 | Win7 Disk Management cannot extend my C drive partition. Shrink works, but the Extend option is grey and yes I have Admin Privs. Easeus Partition Manager also will not allow me to extend C drive (also as Admin). So I think I need a boot disk to make C drive larger. GParted (download.cnet.com) is free, but it does appear complicated to use. Are there any other freeware programs run as a boot disk? |

On that site, under Navigation Links / screen shots & theres a user Guide/full manual with screen shots explaining how to do what ever you want including moving free space from one partition to another - theres also videos on "how to do it" |

| 1289780 | 2012-07-21 01:59:00 | You need free space to expand your C:\ into. That is why the option is greyed out if there isn't any. If you have a D drive abutting the C drive, then you need to move that drive into a free space area. If you dont have a free space area then you need to resize the D drive smaller and move it so that there is free space between the C and D drives. A bit difficult to explain :) |

| 1289781 | 2012-07-21 03:39:00 | Terry, I did try reducing the size of D but the option to extend C was still grey. See screenshot here (www.imagef1.net.nz). Notice that there is a large amount of Unallocated Space. I have no idea why that is there (I have not used this pc / hd for over a year) but I would like to get rid of it probably by merging it into D. When I tried to reduce D so as to extend C, I did not reboot and allow D partition to shrink - should I have? I am assuming that I could shrink one partition and extend an adjacent one at the same time. Am I on the right track or have I done this wrong? You need free space to expand your C:\ into. A partition mananger should allow you to move the D partition to the right, so that unallocated or free space is now between the two partitions. The C drive will then have room to expand into. Edit: I don't think the Win 7 disk manager can do this. |

| 1289784 | 2012-07-21 04:52:00 | There is another way. Clone the D partition/drive to an external drive, then delete it from your harddrive using the Win7 manager. You can then extend the C drive to the size you want. Use the manager to create another D partition and then clone the D partition back from the external drive. | Terry Porritt (14) | ||

D partition is data only, no programs, so I guess I could simply copy and paste the entire 200+ Gb onto my other 1T hd, then shift it back. Or would cloning be quicker, better? I have not done Cloning before. [edit] - Actually, D should already be backed up on my other 1T hd (will have to check - I just resurrected this pc yesterday). |

| 1289786 | 2012-07-21 06:29:00 | Have you checked whether Easus Partition Manager will allow you to move the D partition "to the right" ? If so then your problem is more or less solved, you would just need to extend C. Easus Disk Copy, freeware, will copy/clone a partition to another drive. www.easeus.com this would be better than trying to copy file by file or folder by folder. There is a limit to what the clipboard can store ! Or use Gparted, gparted.sourceforge.net |

I was able to move D to the right, and fiddled around so that C is the right size (larger) and there is no unallocated space. I had given up on Easeus, so thanks for prodding to try it again Terry. :thanks |
