Even if they knew the japs were in North Pacific they still might have thought they were on a naval exercise. US Military Intelligence (an oxymoron?) knew all about the pending strike. I wholly believe this from documents and first person accounts I have read. I have also spoken to people who were in Pearl when it happened. The US and England knew of this attack days before it happened. more than a few lets start with Florida Florida is a state - but I can understand your chagrin. Miami and Tampa are good candidates though. Oh, and The Okefenokee Swamp is a good ground zero too. |

One of them fell in love with a beautiful young Masterton woman, came back after the war (after surviving Guadalcanal, etc.), married her, and raised a family of five children. He is still here, age 90, my father-in-law. As far as I am concerned USA military personnel are very welcome in NZ, especially to give training sessions and to participate in joint exercises. |

That's great to hear. The Yanks are no different to us, have their good ones' and their bad ones'. Have two Souvenirs given to me by a Marine, after 1942, both look as though they had seen a bit of shrapnel, a 1 cent piece and a lapel badge. Should dig them out and put a copy on here. Lurking. |
