That's not the case at my school, we get i3 powered machines. Pretty fast if I say so myself. They all run windows 7. The keyboards are in a good way too. There is the odd Pentium D PC and Core 2 Duo (second gen) which are still pretty quick. If you have a laptop sure take it, but it shouldn't be compulsory to buy one as some may not be able to afford it.

1290747 2012-07-26 08:56:00 Yeah, our schools pc suites have the $h*ttest pcs. And the keyboards keys are mixed around and our network crashes all the time and the school have blocked practically every site and each pc has different versions of software on it so everything is incompatable, and there are different os's like window server 2003, win xp and win 7. So yeah this is why i think i need a laptop. stratex5 (16685)
1290748 2012-07-26 09:07:00 I've been reading a bit about some schools, I think there's one in Nelson, and another in Orewa. In Orewa they have to use the iPad (Probably a higher echelon school where they can get away with mandating that), whereas the one in Nelson is actively encouraging a combination of Netbooks, Laptops, Macbooks, iPads and alternative Android tablets.

I like the idea of "BYOD" (Bring Your Own Device), more so than I like the idea of one particular type of device (Of any sort) being mandated.

I'll name and shame the school for you. It's Garin College a Catholic school and yes they are encouraging whatever platform you wish to buy. Which I'm much more in favour of than enforcing a you Must have this and nothing else. But I still think the onus should be on the Government to provide schools with adequate funding to buy computers instead.

I read an article last week on some schools sending out debt collectors to people who haven't paid the school donation. SO I say to those schools Hello its a Donation

Man that is pretty bad. We hardly have any probs at all. We use word 2010 and the Adobe CS5 Master Suite or Collection or something.

You realize that laptops would have to be restricted in some sense when on a school network, same sites will be blocked and you're still going to have network crashes. It probably would be nice to have a keyboard that uses the standard qwerty layout :p

Yep, but i dont have to connect to the schools server to run my pc, i would use it for all the other things, and if i really needed to i could get mobile bb. And yeah a qwerty keyboard would really help my typing speeds:D

1290752 2012-07-26 10:22:00 It's much easier for students to maintain their hardware rather than the school. All they should worry about is infrastructure and staff machines.

Network control is usually done via proxy or VPN. We use schoolzone's proxy and filtering tools, useless to some extend. Filtering is not a HUGE deal. It's more of an issue where boarders are involved. The "normal" school blocklists are fine to some extent. having to live with them is a different story. VPN's are a bloody life saver if you want stuff classed as "blogs and wiki" "personal pages" to name a few. Even PF1 is blocked under "forums and bulletin" I SSH or VPN to my home machine just to have a bare minimum browsing experaince.

Often network dropouts are not school related, more likely it's the external network, this happens with us a lot since we are out the end of Willowpark, we get "dirty power" too since we are at the end of the line and the power isn't very stable. We did have problems with a power surge which reset a few routers. This caused them to form "pirate" DHCP servers, the result was a plague of networks springing up and clients were slow to resolve local addresses/get IP's.

If school's had kids bring their own machines all the funding for shared and soon to be outdated machines could be put towards upgrading the infrastructure. In the same way we all own cars (well some of us) and the Govt maintains the highways for us, rather than sharing vehicles which were managed by the Govt.

But still, Below 5th form, ya don't need one. If you think you do you are having a laugh!
