1290192 2012-07-24 01:45:00 If you shop around for lower prices:

i3 2100 $156
Asus 1155 Mobo $83.50
4gb DDR3 $31.70
Windows $150
Seagate Momentus 250gb 2.5" Drive (cheaper than 3.5) $79.30

Total: $500.50

How much cheaper? Admittedly the price of the 2.5"-3.5" adaptor isn't much, but if the savings are negligible I'd just go with the 3.5" drive to save hassle.

We do, but factoring course costs over 3 years.... yeah.

1290195 2012-07-24 03:43:00 www.pp.co.nz there's a few good options there, the pentium G630 is grunty enough for day to day use and gives you the option of upgrading to an i5 later but an i3 is a better option if if fits in the budget and you might not even need to upgrade it.

If you want cheap now AMD have some good options, but unfortunately the upgrade path stops a lot lower on the performance scale than for an intel system.
I'd say AMD do low-mid performance at competitive prices and intel do low, mid, high but with weaker integrated graphics.

I'd agree with that. AMD basically falls behind after the 2500k/2600k point (The 8150 just isn't competitive) and even earlier with the use of specific applications. Photoshop is probably the most notable one.

1290197 2012-07-24 08:29:00 Thanks for all the info guys. Money is tight right now, so the G630 looks good. I like the look of this bundle (comes with a 500Gb HDD too):

1290198 2012-07-24 08:43:00 Ooh, I like this better. The mobo has USB 3.0, which will help a lot with transferring stuff to the external HDD...and 4 ram slots, and HDMI interface.

1290199 2012-07-29 09:47:00 Well, all that ^ was scrapped today when browsing in Dick Smith (waiting for the mrs...) came across this:

Thought (sh*t that's cheap), went home and did a little research, talked with wifey, who said she would like a laptop more than a desktop. So ordered one tonight.
