1290152 2012-07-23 00:33:00 Does anyone know how good is 2 Degree's 3G / HSPA+ coverage in various parts of the country?

Apparently they have got their own towers almost everywhere now but also roam on Vodafone's network outside their coverage area . I am quite interested in their new $39 . 95 plan with 1GB of bonus data but only if it has decent speed . The 2Degree Rep's phone was only showing 3G but switched to "H" after rebooting, SpeedTest . net shows 2Gbps+ download speed which seems decent enough considering I am on the outskirt of town and not in the metro area .

I have setup a Telecom XT 3G modem in Levin almost a year ago, it was about 1 . 5km from SH1 and it sync'd at 21Mbps and had very good speed whilst Vodafone's vodem was pathetic at the same spot . It was not much better than dialup, when someone RDP out using the Vodem, they were like 10 to 20 characters behind when typing!! Whereas the Telecom connection was almost like LAN speed .

How about Roaming overseas? I don't plan to use it for much calls (cost too much) while overseas but just need to be contactable . If I have cheap data overseas, I may be able divert the calls to my VoIP server and forward it to my SIP client but that is not always reliable . Tried a bit of that in Singapore a month ago but the SingTel 3G was absolutely pathetic, worse than dialup there .

That's 500 times better than my ADSL connection :D

1290154 2012-07-23 00:47:00 Speeds / coverage are nowhere near as good as XT in my experience for the better part.

That said there are *some* places where XT has next to no coverage, yet 2degrees does.

However, if you've got coverage, there's a pretty damn good chance it'll be faster with XT.

What you're describing about an RDP session is a latency issue rather than throughput too, so keep that in mind.

Oops, my bad, it was 2Mbps+ !!! LOL

1290156 2012-07-23 01:54:00 Thanks for that Chill :-)

I am only interested in 2Degree because of their 1GB bonus data,
whereas Telecom XT only has 500MB data for their $40 plan

Plus 2D has
* 120 + 100 bonus minutes
* 2500 TXT
* Free Huawei iDEOS X3 with 2 years contract

Not that I need the free phone but that's a nice sweetener.

I can take my XT prepaid SIM out of the T-stick and put it in the iDEOS as a spare hotspot (I hope).
That way, I won't drain the battery on my Galaxy Note and still use up the credit on my XT SIM.

Thanks for that. But the XT connection definitely made a huge difference, the Vodem connection was basically un-usable.

1290157 2012-07-23 12:39:00 I think it might be a hit or a miss with roaming . I was with Voda prepay in Malaysia, couldn't even send text . Was fine in SG .

With NZ 3G for the 1GB to work I think you need 2D towers . If it is roaming with Voda it defaults to the 100MB/mo or their casual rates .

Not true.

:confused:

If you are outside a Mobile Broadband Zone you will be charged our Standard Prepay Rate unless you have a current National 3G Data Pack. If you cancel all your Data Packs and continue to use Data you will be charged at our Standard Prepay Rate.

1290160 2012-07-23 23:25:00 I think that 1GB of bonus data is national data, as opposed to the 1GB pack you can purchase which is broadband zone (2degrees) only. pcuser42 (130)
1290161 2012-07-23 23:32:00 Nope these are the national packs - 50 and 100MB, $6 and $10 respectively per month.

The 1GB is broadband zone. As per the prev link.
