2012-03-27 05:01:00 | I am looking at upgrading my website and adding a Mysql data base. I have been quoted a price by my ISP. I just had a look on Google and I can get a large German company offering me MYSQL and ontold services that I have never heard of 5 Euros a month!

2012-03-27 05:09:00 | Contact PCtek, she may be able to advise of some pricing at the place she works. Keep in mind that off shore while it may be cheaper, when things go wrong often you cant contact them, or if you can it takes ages to fix. Better to pay a little more and actually have a NZ contact that you can phone and speak to. Edited: After speaking to PCTek last year, I'm with webdrive.co.nz (http://www.webdrive.co.nz/) their service is fantastic, phone and if you have a problem it has always been fixed in minutes (hour at the most) , not days or weeks.

2012-03-27 08:17:00 | The other advantage of hosting locally is your website will be "faster", given each HTTP request doesn't have to go halfway around the world and back.Well yes, it will be faster if you're in the country it is hosted in but will be equally slower if you are overseas viewing it. So, its kind of not a point unless you spend a lot of time looking at your own website (which I dont think many do). As I have said in other threads, anything to do with New Zealand and website development (or hosting) is a rip off. I get all my hosting done in the US (servers are in Michigan I think), have done for over 10 years, they are 99.9% reliable, lucky if they go down for a an hour or two once a year. I can always email support and usually have an answer within a few hours if I need it. Full control panel with .php.mysql, unlimited email accounts, Postgresql, a 40+ Fantastico script library etc etc. And all for $15 USD per year, per site (I only maintain 14 sites). Sorry but I really do not see why NZ web hosts have to rob their customers blind (actually, I do, its called "greed") or why NZ'ers have to suffer financially with using local hosting companies. Just my opinion.

2012-03-27 08:40:00 | Where's your target market (if any)? Germany? NZ? or Global? You might need research (searchengineland.com) local or regional language/linguistics content for search visibility if hosting in Germany. Or check with the company about how international searchers search their domains (e.g. Google.de or Google com), and what languages/terms/cultural norms, are used locally. Then you may need optimize (searchengineland.com) to remain visible. | kahawai chaser (3545) | |
2012-03-27 08:50:00 | My target market is the USA the UK and when I can get some pages translated France and Germany. NZ has 4 million people those 4 countries have 400 million. The only reason I mentioned a German web hosting site was that it was the first one I found on Google. My ISP wants to charge me $100 just to install a Mysql database and then charge me a monthly fee. The German site included it in their monthly basic fee. Who cares wher the site is, and if you have local support. As Iantech says there is email! Iantech says $15.00 a year ! (that seems very low, it would hardly cover their admin cost) I pay $10 a month now and then with the Mysql database fee it will be $20 a month ie is $240 a year ! Now I don't mind paying a bit extra for NZ. But that difference seems ridiculous. No wonder I see ads all over the internet for web hosting !

2012-03-27 09:07:00 | Yeah hosting providers can vary a lot. Some have additional things like limits on their bandwidth, some have added extras like auto-installers. Some offer SSH access. Some offer phone support (Which incidentally is probably one of the higher costs associated with Hosting). Some offer protection against others on the same shared-hosting platform by way of limiting their resources etc (So one bad SQL query doesn't pwn the server). There's a lot you can get, or a lot you can get by without ;)

(that seems very low, it would hardly cover their admin cost) I agree, I dont know how they manage for only $15 USD and would be happy to pay more - but they dont ask for more, so I just flick through a paypal payment when a renewal invoice arrives and its end of story :) |
