35051 2002-02-09 10:15:00 I bought a Samsung 52x CD ROM drive on the 23 Jan for $75+GST from E-One Computers Ltd. I have used the drive quite a bit and have come to a conclusion that this drive has been cracking my CDs. (not in the illegal way)

I use this drive for installations since it's supposedly 52x. I used it a lot for Red Hat installations and found my Red Hat Disc 1 to have been cracked down in the centre but not on the data part of the CD. But now it has cracked through the data part.

I threw that CD away thinking it could have been a faulty CD and burnt a new disc 1 of Red Hat with the ISOs I downloaded off the net. Now I've noticed my disc 2 has a similar crack in the centre that doesn't touch the data part but it soon will be if it is used again. I know for sure none of my other drives do this and that this new drive did it.

I am going to return my CD ROM drive and get the next brand that is slightly more expensive. Do you think that they have to replace the CDs I lost? Will they charge me extra for the newer drive which is only a few dollars more? I can't show them the first CD that I lost as it was thrown away but I've still got my disc 2 with the small cracks in the centre.

Would you think it's the drive doing this? Is it the speed it's going at?

None of my CDs have ever gone like this before.

I suggest people keep away from the Samsung CD-Master 52E, Model SC-152.

35052 2002-02-09 10:42:00 What brand of CD's were you using, they could also be inferior quality. I generally try to stay away from Samsung just because they are Samsung. But in reality the Samsung is probably a rebadged CD-ROM or other makes are rebadged Samsung's.

I'd take it back and get them to replace it.

35053 2002-02-09 10:49:00 I think my CDs are inferior quality but they have never been destroyed like this before. I used them in my 48x which I replaced with the 52x and no problems at all.

The CDs are Transonics 700MB/84min 12x CD-Rs which I bought from The Warehouse (20 for $20).

They supposedly would be inferior but since I have had no trouble with them till now I am not going to blame them as they don't crack in my writer.

Anyway I have given up on the Transonic brand and now am considering Dick Smiths (Imation) 700MB/84min 24x CD-Rs (10 for $12).

35054 2002-02-09 11:35:00 Hi Kame

I have the exact cd rom as the one mention in your post.
This one is a replacement. I've had it for 3 months with no problems. I was instructed by the technician, cd's crack and chomped on because of the speed of the rom. With regards getting a replacement, forget. It is always best to clean your cd's with cd cleaners because of the amount of scratches.

35055 2002-02-09 11:48:00 My Dear Krazee...

I wouldn't go near anything samsung with a brage pole...

I have had no end of problems with samsung equipment (which I bought because it was cheap), and know many people who have the same problems... ALWAYS stick to a good reliable brand... For CDROMs as people have been saying CDs do get temperamental at high rotaional speeds, but probably half of the problem is a nasty drive. Looking at the physics of it, the CD pick-up thingy-bob, may be slightly (I'm talking fractions of a millimetre) too wide, putting a squeeze on the CDs, which, when combined with high speeds is just too much. I almost always recommend a Diamond Data 52X or an Aopen 52X. I use these regularly, as do my friends, and we've had no problems. Though it would never hurt to drop down to a 48X (or there-abouts) to be sure.

Hope that helps

:)

35056 2002-02-09 12:17:00 Thanks guys.

I will get another 52x (Acer/Aopen) and if I get the same problem I'll track down my 48x and see if they want a faster CD ROM that eats CDs (I'll leave out the eating part).

35057 2002-02-09 22:09:00 Hey give Samsung a break, their gear is actually quite good and performs well usually. Diamond data used to be good, but the failure rate on their newer cdrom drives is horrendous (plus they take ages to spin the cd up and the flap tray variety make an annoying hissing sound too) Guest (0)
