35086 2002-02-10 01:24:00 I have WinME & RH7.1 Getting along very nicely on my system, what i would like to know is how do I get a driver for my winmodem (Conexant k56?)to work under Linux, I know there are drivers out there, but as I don't have a linux Web connection how do I download one, can it be done under Windows, also are there any linux games out there of the strategy or action flavours.
Thanx in advance

35087 2002-02-10 01:35:00 Hi,

I'm relatively new to linux, but I'll answer what I can...

Firstly, as for a winmodem, drivers are out there for just about everything, so get searhing, you'll need to know the make, model and preferably all the model/serial numbers of your modem. Then just chuck them all into a search engine with '+' between each part, and with a little luck you'll find what your looking for relatively painlessly...

Next off, yes you can download it in windows, but you'll only be able to save it in a windows partition (windows can't see linux), but that's Okay, because you can then just find it under /mnt/windows/ (assuming that's what redhat called it, or what you choose to at install...).

In my experience with the linux game market, anything is available at a price... People (even linyux Guru's) still want to make money out of games, so anything decent is gonna be a trip to the shop... However, you can get some reasonable games for linux free, take a look at www.linuxgames.com. They have a whole stack of good games, and links to places where you can download things like UT, Half-life, Quake3 etc...

If you don't get along well with tarballs you're going to have a few problems as just about all games come uncompiled, or as a .tgz file... Talk to Graham about it....

Hope that helps

35088 2002-02-10 01:53:00 You may not have asked Linux to mount the Windows partition at boot? - if not then login as root and:

1. create a mount point e.g. /mnt/win

2. Issue the command 'mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/win' assuming you saved the downlaoded file to the c: drive.

You will find your downloaded file under /mnt/win

35089 2002-02-10 03:08:00 Conexant have release their own driver module for a Conexant 56k. b m posted the address here on 6-02-02. If i have transcribed this wrong,

www.conexant.com

you can look up the original posting.

That is a WinDOS .exe whic=h expands to a binary RPM, a source RPM, and a tarball.

Since you have 7.1, you can probably use the binary RPM without any problems. Kame is having problems because he is at the bleeding edge. (Or ahead of it).

Check the HOWTOs -- there's one specifically for 'Conexant-Rockwell' modems, and even a site for internal modems.

If you have internet access, you can download any linux stuff using Windows. They are just files. Some will need to be unpacked using Windows/DOS before they are usable in Linux. (.exe especially). .zip files can often be unzipped in linux, but if they were done on WinDOS systems, it might be better to undo them there.

Feel free to come back if you strike problems.
