34995 2002-02-09 05:53:00 We live in a country town, our internet connection has really slowed down, just the same time as an electric fence click started on the phone line, (several other neighours have noticed this as well, so its not our specific problem). Our nearest farmer turned his electric fence unit off to check if it was his causing the problem, but no, the click still continued, what do we do now?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Heather

34997 2002-02-09 06:35:00 Hi Heather

Get hold of a portable AM/FM radio. Tune it to where there is no radio station. Turn up the volume until the background noise can be heard.
Now drive (or walk) round your local area, going up all the side streets etc ( with the radio with you of course) and you will soon hear when you are close to a faulty fence.

Nearly all faulty fences are caused by a deficient earthing system or by excessive growth touching the live wires.

Once found, approach the owner, explain the effects it is having to your i/net connection, let him hear the radio in action and ask if he could please take a look at his fence.

34998 2002-02-09 07:24:00 Hi Heather,
Contact Telecom faults. Whoever has the faulty fence unit is actually breaking the law - though probably not intentionally. It is a real common problem - usually due to poor earthing on the fence unit. Telecom can and will trace the offender and help recify the problem (assuming you are a Telecom customer - otherwise ring your own Telco.)
Regards,
Ray
