35252 2002-02-11 02:29:00 Our organisation has an NT4 domain, and a mixture of Win98 and Win2k PC's. When we moved to Win2k we opted to have our Win2k machines log on to the domain so when they accessed network resources they wouldn't need to re-enter usernames and passwords (this isn't a problem with 98 as machines in a workgroup can still have network usernames and passwords). Some of these Win2k machines are located in remote offices and dial in as required to access network resources, but nornally they aren't connected to the domain. The problem occurs when one of these remote Win2k machines wants to share its printer with the other machines in the remote office, it fails because it cannot validate the user attempting to access the share even when set to share with 'everyone'. We don't really want our users to have to switch between logging on to the domain or the workgroup as a solution. Strange as it may seem, a PC from another domain will be allowed to access the resource shared as 'everyone'. Guest (0)

Any chance of using a machine at remote site as a backup domain controller that local machines can log in to when not connected?

I thought RAS meant you ended up with 'dual personality' in a way. You would log in to local machine, then RAS in later and say username, password, and domain, for that connection only.

35254 2002-02-11 21:09:00 It is getting tricky,

We could have backup domain controllers, but your talking about 50 sites or more and some only have 3-4 computers so it's not really economical.

As for the finer workings of RAS I?m not so sure, all I know is when I reached one of the Win2k servers I would need to re-enter my username and password. It wasn?t an issue with the NT4 servers.
