35435 2002-02-12 08:26:00 Linux actually has a bult in firewall. However if you have a Pentium 300 + you could try:
www.astaro.com

Their firewall product is free for personal use. They also have a good forum for the software at :
www.astaro.org

I was also looking for antivirus software, but there doesn't seem to be much out there. Mainly due to the fact that there aren't really any viruses for unix/linux yet.

Hope this helps.

35436 2002-02-12 10:21:00 You can configure your own firewall with ipchains for Kernel 2.2 and older and iptables for later Kernels.

An alternative is PortSentry found at:

35437 2002-02-12 11:06:00 The solutions posted by the other two are perfectly adequate, but as another resource, there is a Norton personal firewall (or something similar) on one of the PC world CD's, about Sept last year perhaps?

I tried it out, and it was primo, but in the end I finished up using the one built into linux...No particularly good reason, I think I accidentaly removed PCW's one...

No idea as for antivirus, do a bit of a search with google.com

:)

35439 2002-02-13 02:53:00 The main protection Linux has is that it is difficult to do 'much' damage to a Linux system without having root privilege.

The breaks into Linux which have occured have usually been through people playing interactive games as root.
This is not a Good Idea. Just don't login as root. It's not necessary.

There have been security problems in some of the
legacy Unix utilities such mail, finger, etc. 'All the known bugs have been fixed'.

There is a standalone firewall version of Linux (eSmith) which seems to be pretty good.
