35497 2002-02-13 04:21:00 I have nt4 and win98 installed on my computer. When I switch the
computer on a menu is shown which gives me the option of which operating
system to boot. WinNt is highlighted by default. Can I change it so that
Win98 is the default option???If so can I change the delay also???

35498 2002-02-13 04:57:00 It is all to do with the boot.ini file - have a look at www.labmice.net

This is for W2k but there are other references for NT4.

35499 2002-02-13 05:01:00 Yes and yes. You have to access the hiden file boot.ini .

from DOS, 'attrib -h -s \boot.ini'. It is probably a good idea to now save a copy of that file to a floppy so you can restore it from a recovery disk if you get it wrong.

Then use Wordpad or any TEXT editor. It must be a plain text file.

If there is a line 'timeout=30', change the number -- number of seconds. Otherwise insert one, at the top of the file.

There is a line 'default=multi(0) ... partition(1)\WINDOWS'. There are a couple of lines below which give the options you have. Change the 'default=' line to match the one you want. (It will probably just need changing the number after 'partition', but look very carefully, and make sure you get it right.

Save it, 'attrib +h +s \boot.ini' , and reboot._

35500 2002-02-13 05:52:00 Oops -- I wrote Wordpad; I meant Notepad. Or ant TEXT editor (or Save As plain text). Can't emphasise it enough: the file has to be plain text, not in any word processor format. Guest (0)
