35623 2002-02-14 04:33:00 Hi,Using xp.pro in a new puter and can't remember how to turn off the horrible screech on Dial up.
Thanks to the guys who helped with the decision to upgrade and have a dual boot with 98se. Like a BMW after an old Prefect.
Regards Ron..

35624 2002-02-14 04:50:00 Hi

In Control Panel go to Network Connections. Right mouse on your Dial up connection and choose properties. On the General tab, choose Configure (to configure the modem) and uncheck the box that says 'Enable Modem Speaker'.

If this doesn't work. Choose Phone and modem options in the control panel, choose the modems tab, select your modem on the list and choose properties select the advanced tab, and enter the following in the Extra Initialisation string box: ATM0

This command will turn off the modem speaker. If that doesn't work then it may not be possible to turn your modem speaker off.

Never heard of sidecutters, Scott? That's a bit brutal, but if it can't be turned off, a blob of Blutack on the piezo sounder will quieten it a lot.

35627 2002-02-14 04:59:00 Hi,

If all else fails have a crack at using the extra settings box... This will be located under an 'Advance' button somewhere in your modem properties (I'm not entirely sure with WinXP)

In the Extra settings Box, type:

M0

That's a Zero, not an 'o'. M0 makes it silent, M1 makes it loud at connection, and M2 makes it loud ALL THE DAMN TIME!

You'll likely need to reboot before it takes effect...

Hope that helps

:)
