36038 2002-02-17 11:29:00 Hi,

I live in an area which is not DSL capable. However I wondered if it is possible to use a DSL modem anyway, and just connect at 56K...

I want to be able to surf, and have the line clear at the same time, as is possible with DSL, but I suspect that this is part of what makes my area not DSL capable...

Is what I want possible?

Thanks,

Erin

36039 2002-02-17 18:58:00 You might find it cheaper to run a second phone line dedicated just to the internet at about $30 a month line rental than spend the 300+ for the dsl modem and still pay for a 'second' phone line. I can see where you are wanting to go but using a dsl modem to do it is still going to cost you that '2nd' line anyway. Guest (0)

2. If you want a free line for phone calls then consider a second telephone line (more $).

3. Before committing to a DSL/56K modem, contact Telecom and find out when your area will be upgraded to DSL. If they are not going to upgrade your area then I'll forget about buying a DSL modem altogether.

36041 2002-02-17 23:28:00 if you live in a telstra-saturn connected area, consider getting a cable modem connection. I have one here in CHCH and there is no looking back! Guest (0)
36042 2002-02-18 01:13:00 What makes your area non-DSL is the exchange equipment, and the cables and overhead lines. All expensive. What the new stuff gives is bandwidth: enough from the exchange to you to make the 3kHz needed for a phone connection a small proportion of the total.

There is a filter which separates the low frequencues for telephone use, and leaves the rest for the digital connection.

Can't you train your parents to use the phone only when you are not on the computer? Say between 0200-0700, 0830-1530 ...

36043 2002-02-18 04:10:00 My parents got a second phone line because I'm always on the net (yes I know I'm sad).

You could always pay half or something similar if they are reluctant.

Good luck, JM

36044 2002-02-18 06:39:00 Sorry Erin, but you can't use a dsl modem like a 56k one.Won't work,it uses different frequencies to the 56k one,way higher,so no point getting one. There are 2 reasons usually why you may not be able to get dsl where you are.The exchange may not be upgraded to it yet,( it may be soon, check with Telecom) or you are to far from the exchange,(nothing you can do about that)
Hope this gives you some ideas

36045 2002-02-18 08:37:00 Hi,

Thanks, that answers my question... Sounds like a no :(

Never mind,

:)

Erin

P.S. We are already running two lines, but neither for the net alone...
