| 36159 | 2002-02-18 09:48:00 | Why is it that my computer at work connected to a dial up 56k modem always connects at 28.8 and downloads many times faster than my, better specced, home computer which connects at 50-52000bps via a 56k modem. They both connect to the same account at xtra. The work computer seems to receive an almost constant stream of data whereas my home PC receives in bursts with pauses of no activity in between. Checked all cables etc but it puzzles and annoys me somewhat. | Guest (0) | ||

If you live in a rural area, or somewhere damp, or a long way from the exchange, or just about ANYTHING else, you are probably getting a cheap and nasty line to your isp... What can one do? Unplug other devices and try again, you'll get a stronger loop current and that means that your modem wil find it easier to hear what the other computer is saying... Similar to talking to someone a long way away on the phone... Otherwise just take out dodgy bits and pieces between the computer and the phone jack - double adapters etc... Hope that helps :) Erin |
