36362 2002-02-20 01:06:00 Usernames in MSN Messenger under winXP:

When I go to log on to msn messenger, I am given the option to select a user name from a set of usernames in a drop down box.

There are several that I can choose from, but only two are actual valid usernames, the others are usernames that are essentially the same as the real usernames, but with one or two letters difference (they appeared after I tried to log on with a mis-spelled username).

I am assuming that these names are stored somewhere in my system and that I can delete them as there is no point showing invalid usernames to me when I go to log on.

I tried to find an option in messenger to turn off displaying usernames, but was unsuccessful, I also had a hunt for them in the registry, but I only found the valid usernames, not the invalid ones.

Can anyone suggest a way of either removing the unwanted usernames or not showing any usernames when I try to log on.

Cheers,
Mark.

36365 2002-02-21 08:42:00 Sorry..I see you are using XP...
Go to Control panel, user accounts..Change Account..Related Tasks..Manage passwords..The offending passwords should show there, just delete and all will be ok.

Good Luck

36366 2002-02-23 01:29:00 Hey there Mark - In addition to the useful responses you've already got, have you heard of a bit of software called WidowWasher? It's available from <www.webroot.com> for US$29.95 & has had very good reviews. The Macintosh version is called MacWasher. It's good for cleaning away unwanted bits, including the contents of the sneaky .dat files. I run both versions & am well pleased with the results. Check the website also for additional plug-ins. Kind regards....Wills. Guest (0)
