36503 2002-02-21 02:58:00 Have internal speakers, standard crappy ESS sound. All of a sudden, after it has been fine for ages, I am getting static out of it.
Seems to change when I move the MS Cordless mouse, but continues even if I remove batteries in mouse.

Have restarted, have rationalised startup programs, restarted. No change.

Noticed it when I use Studio PCTV to record some video, but have removed device and still does it (and restarted).

Nothing else has really changed.

Any suggestions?

36504 2002-02-21 04:09:00 My guess is that even though the TV hardware has gone, some or all of the software remains and is being executed as part of start up. I have a TV card that works very well except that every time the PC is started static comes through the speakers until the TV application is started and stopped. Might be worth trying. Guest (0)
36505 2002-02-21 05:02:00 run regedit and go here

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices

Feel free to delete anything in here. It will kill added programmes that run in the background. (kill MDM for better system performance)

also go here

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

Any entries you delete here will stop programmes running at windows startup.

36507 2002-02-21 07:44:00 I tried both those areas, there is hardly anything there and I know what they are.
They have been around for ages (Zonealarm, NAV, mouse, sort of thing only about five in total).

Thanks, anyway, Gerard.

Any other suggestions? Driving me nuts, have to turn down speaker so low I can't hear if I have email.

Cheers, r e t
