| 36687 | 2002-02-22 23:59:00 | Mandrake can do the partitioning, but depending on you level of knowledge and whether you want to run another OS (Windows) along side Mandrake it may be easier to us another patitioning total to setup the partitions first. My favourite is EFDISK which comes with a boot manager called masterbooter.. can be downloaded from www.masterbooter.com . | Guest (0) | ||
| 36688 | 2002-02-23 01:25:00 | Yes, Yes, Yes. Joy, Delight, Raptures. A new formatted disk. Mandrake, or ANY Linux distribution, will 'properly' handle partitioning on a *new formatted HDD*. Even Windows can partition a new formatted disk for one Windows flavour. The problems come when people want to have multiple OSs on one physical disk. And WON'T READ THE MANUALS. Partitioning is tricky. Never use one operating system to make partitions for another operating system. It DOES NOT WORK. There will be tears before bedtime. If you want to multiboot Linux with Windows 9x, use MS FDISK to make the Windows partitions, and leave the rest of the disk UNALLOCATED. Install the Windows first. Then install the Linux. It will make its own partitions and, if you answer its questions correctly, allow you to access the Windows files from Linux, and setup for multiboot using LILO or the new GNU loader. This all works -- I have had only one box which causes a problem : Compaq DeskPro 4000, and there are tricks to get around the problem. |
