1291558 2012-07-30 01:38:00 Hey guys, so I'm hoping you can help me out!

Last night I had a good clean up of my computer, in the end I made a new user and transferred all my files over and deleted the old one! Using Windows Vista btw . . . .

There are several OS's installed on the computer, Win Vista, XP and Ubuntu .

Turning on the computer this morning no OS's want to open properly . . . XP and Vista don't even try to open and just stay on blank screen with flashing key for a while before restarting .

Ubuntu comes up with several error messages . . . Could not update iceauthority
There is a problem with the configuration server
Could not create the following required folders

Ubuntu tries to open the home screen but just stalls on the wallpaper . .

PLEASE HELP!

1291560 2012-07-30 02:02:00 Yes I'm for real! Thanks for replying....I have tried F8 but the key doesn't open anything. Is it F8 or is there another key I have to use? pct (16854)
1291561 2012-07-30 02:02:00 As trev said, boot into safe mode. Do this by pressing and holding f8 while booting Nick G (16709)
1291562 2012-07-30 02:19:00 What sort of files did you clean up?? ChazTheGeek (16619)
1291563 2012-07-30 02:24:00 Is it a laptop? If so what brand? or is it a desktop? Were you using Grub as the bootloader?

And I don't suppose you had a system image as a backup?

1291564 2012-07-30 02:27:00 Are the different OS's on seperate HDD's or just seperate partitions? If it's seperate HDDs try setting the BIOS boot order for one of the windows drives first.
You could try a repair install of either XP or Vista but it'll likely kill Grub and any boot menu you might have unless you can disconnect the Linux drive first.

Sounds a lot like you deleted something you shouldn't have, which isn't a problem because you can just restore from a backup right?

1291565 2012-07-30 02:28:00 Thanks guys, I can't get it to safe mode... it goes to the BIOS and then the OS selection. If I select Windows, it doesn't give the second selection of XP or Vista, it just stays on blank screen for a few minutes and reboots. Ubuntu, as above just gives a series of error messages and doesn't boot up either. So it doesn't seem to even be able to get into safe mode...

The files were just old emails/word files etc...

1291566 2012-07-30 02:32:00 The different OS's are just seperate partitions i think. It's Vista that I most want to save coz all my files are on that... I can't work out what I would have deleted because apart from old emails/and just general word documents all I deleted was the old user...

Unfortunately no backup. :(

1291567 2012-07-30 02:43:00 Have you tried the recovery options on Vista's DVD? Windows 7's are excellent and I believe Vista has a similar set. pcuser42 (130)
