1290989 2012-07-26 08:26:00 Until last year my main computer was an old (over 10 years) PB Tech PB502 (running XP) tower machine (but still running sweetly). One night in September I fell for the “foreign” scammers and they began to take over my machine. When I woke up enough to think logically I pulled out the modem connection: and it hasn’t been connected since.

They say once you’ve let the bas***ds in the computer it’s never yours again. If that’s true then I might as well dump it.

However, said PB502 still it runs fine (it’s a darned sight faster than my newer laptop using Vista!).

But when I run RegZooka it shows 797 errors and then goes into a loop (70% complete), and it runs forever……………..

Being retired, I’d like to reclaim the ‘502, if possible, and once more connect it to the Internet. Can it be done or am I wasting my time?

In addition, my Trend Micro protection has run out. So if/when I do reconnect to the modem I’ll be unprotected until I’ve downloaded the renewed Trend Micro cover. How do I remain safe in this scenario?

1290990 2012-07-26 08:50:00 dont know about the rest but o stay safe only go to sites you know and dont dowload anything that you havent downloaded before, technically you dont need av if your on your guard but as it happens everyone lets there guard down on a regular bases and sometimes it will screw you over. 1290991 2012-07-26 08:52:00 Well I wouldnt use Regzooka whatever that is. It sounds dodgy. If it can still get on the internet, boot into safe mode / networking. Get teamviewer. Install then run it (http://www.teamviewer.com). Send the ID and password it gives you to me, in a PM.

I could check it out from here

But get rid of Regzooka. And uninstall Trendmicro. If you want me to check it out, I'll install something on it, if you boot into safe mode / networking (thats if it works). Or if you've got an XP cd reinstall XP

1290992 2012-07-26 09:16:00 Do a complete reinstall? Download the installer for whichever Anti virus you decide to use on another computer (I would go for Nod32 over anything else) install it before plugging the old comp back into the net at least you will be partially protected until it has downloaded the latest definitions gary67 (56)
1290993 2012-07-26 09:26:00 Just depending on what has been installed ( if anything) the worst case scenario is wipe the drive and reinstall windows from fresh, after saving all data, favourites and anything else you don't want to lose.

Don't listen to people that say you dont need protection, you do, no matter how careful you may be.
These days you can get malware on your computer and not even have a web site open. This was proven last week, when doing a fresh install of a customers XP. There is what's called drive by downloads, wrong place wrong time and you can get hit.

Had this happen to the PC I just mentioned, I had just installed windows, and was installing Nod32 using the latest installer before doing any updates, connected to the internet to download it, within a minute I got hit by malware saying PC is infected and you have to pay bla bla bla.

So it was wipe the drive and start again.

1290994 2012-07-26 10:35:00 I wasnt saying go unprotected forever just while you get the anti virus and malware. Slankydudl (16687)
1290995 2012-07-26 11:08:00 That remark wasn't aimed directly at you Slankydudl, it was a general comment. :)

I've seen on a few forums lately as well as here some saying you generally dont need an anti-virus at all, and anyone not knowing may have a tendency to follow that advice.Often its followed by "I've never got an infection", but many infections don't exactly jump out and announce they are there.

The point I was making is it doesn't matter how careful a person is you can get hit at any time. Its not the first time I 've had that happen over the years, installing a AV and get hit while its installing and a browser has never been opened (wrong place wrong time).

1290996 2012-07-26 12:53:00 As usual Wainuitech is right - antivirus and malware is mandatory.

Avast is my fav free antivirus
Spybot and Adaware are my gave antispyware
Nod32 my fav pay for antivirus

Malwarebytes my fav of all

Just to clarify you will need to clean it up but never need to discard hardware due to virus.

And if you have time DO report to the Telecom fraud squad as they can track and prosecute.

1290997 2012-07-26 12:55:00 Without knowing exactly what they did I would say format and reinstall Windows to be sure.

After I install Windows, I boot a Linux CD and download the latest drivers and an installer for the AV direct from their websites and install them all offline.

Can't be too paranoid!

1290998 2012-07-26 23:18:00 Thanks for all the replies - with lots of options. I'll think about which way to jump over the weekend.
A Regzooka review can be seen at softwareindustryreport.com , and it was on that basis that I decided to use it.

Re complete re-install - I'd love to avoid that as I have various odd programs (picked up over a decade) that I'm attached to and use occasionally [don't we all?]. Much of those are no longer available. But I suppose I'll kiss that goodbye if I decided to dump the machine anyway!............ Decisions, decisions!

I'm not sure whether I have the original installation discs; I'll check that too. As a dear friend says, when somebody prevaricates "Answers come out next week".
