1267279 2012-03-28 21:38:00 What did I do? It has decided that all my MP3s are illegal - they are NOT. I personally own each and every one if them and have them in several boxes in storage in the house.

But here's the funny part - I can't find where to remove WMP from my system. Where does it hide?

1267280 2012-03-28 22:17:00 add remove programs, look for a tab that says something like remove windows components expand it and select wmp. It doesn't actually get rid of it but you can't see it anymore and it is completely dormant until you decide to reinstall it gary67 (56)
1267281 2012-03-28 23:35:00 Going there - thanks. SurferJoe46 (51)
1267282 2012-03-28 23:43:00 I also downloaded VLC and took WMP's permission to access files from it. I sent WMP to check my desktop for it's only access - so it's running in circles I think.

VLC is OK - but just barely. It has some interfaces that I don't like, such as losing the list of performers and album titles all the time.

I have to actually double click on an entry and get it to expand to find the music I want.

WMP also seems to have poisoned a few files/folders too - that sux big time.

Got a better idea for a media player?

1267284 2012-03-29 00:43:00 VLC isn't a lot of good as your main player, as it doesn't have a proper library. It's a fantastic media player if you don't need a library.

Winamp used to be quite good, I haven't used that for years though.

Googling it as I post this .

Hmmmm --- this kinda bothers me "doubleTwist Player: Android app (★★★★¼, >250000 downloads) ⇒ "The Cure for iTunes withdrawal" "- I'm not an iPoo fan .

Yeah the library generally isn't there at all . Winamp was always thought by me to be risky - I think I have an old copy of it somewhere . Doesn't it phone home too?

1267286 2012-03-29 01:01:00 What did you use to rip the original CD's ? Also were they ripped on the same computer as the one you are playing the music on now.

From what you describe I would say at a guess, if you ripped with WMP and didn't untick copy protect Music, then that could be why.

1267287 2012-03-29 01:21:00 I've been using WMP10 for years and have both ripped and played from it. I had an 'issue' with the update to WMP11 once and it fried all my files too.

I did a roll back and all has been nice for a while now. I bet it was a Windows update that did this.

It was just nasty to put them all back in again after that burn down what with spinning my CD player for days and days.

All my ripped and saved files are being played on the same machine as they were originally too. I have all my MP3s archived in several places this time though, as I learned from the last time..

This last screw up situation was when I went to play a Santana album, there were absolutely no files in the WMP10 player list.

At the same time, my 'traffic' LED on my router was going nuts and after about an hour (I'm patient) - I got my list back and every one was orange-d out and an exclamation mark in front of the files.

I clicked on one and got told that I didn't have permission to listen to it or any of the files. Thankfully I have them all backed up on another exterior HDD and another area away from the current OS partition on the HDD-F, and I never turn it or the external HDD-K on unless I'm actually archiving something - so they were and are still safe.

But I have the actual Santana Abraxas CD right here in my hands from which I ripped it into WMP10 and which is now oranged-out ---- so that's a big M$ lie.

One - maybe the only good thing - about VLC is it fast to play a song but only after the list is created. Creating the list is an agony each and every time I turn it on though. I have 23,406 entries in MP3s, so I am kinda deeply interested in as feew problems as possible.
