1291658 2012-07-31 04:57:00 Any i5 or i7 CPU, 4GB or more of RAM, and a graphics card with it's own dedicated RAM, and you should be fine for a couple of years. Any more than that is pure speculation in the PC world.

I totally agree that laptops are not gaming machines and would myself go for a cheaper laptop for portability and a desktop for serious work and gaming. A $1000 laptop + a $2000 desktop would totally own any $3000 laptop for performance and be something you could upgrade in future.

I understand why people like laptops though, and as long as it has a reasonable graphics card in it they do ok at gaming. Just don't expect to play the latest graphics intesive games with the eye candy turned on. One saving grace is the lower resolution of a laptop screen requiring less muscle to game on.

The chart on this page www.tomshardware.com includes some mobile graphics chipsets so you can get some Idea of their relative performance.

Solid laptop. The E5xx series is a tad chunky though. The GPU in that is actually better than the one in the sony (on average about 5% better), the hard drive is also faster (7200rpm vs 5400rpm). The Sony is a tad overpriced imo. But the sony will completely destroy when it comes to CPU intensive applications.
