| 1291056 | 2012-07-28 23:18:00 | My question is - whats wrong with your computer that makes you think you need it? If the answer is nothing, then why do you want it? | Iantech (16386) | ||

Makes me laugh -- people install programs to "make the PC faster" well helloooo ;) one of the things that slows PC's down is to many programs running using resources, so if you have a couple of programs "speeding things up" they themselves are using resources and slowing things down. :groan: |

Is that PC Matic program any good? I've heard it is. Sort of hard to believe though. PC Pit stop recommend it. You have to pay about $40.00 though. |

| 1291060 | 2012-07-29 22:30:00 | Hi Wainui, appreciated your comment, and ask, other than using programs of this so-called clean up type, what sort of manual maintenance using the in-built software should we be doing? I am not confident enough to mess around in the registry for instance, and defragging never seems to achieve the boasted benefits. What else is there? Leaving aside operating and system files as installed by Windows, and program files as installed by the user, is there anything which should be installed to help housekeeping? |

Um, you can uninstall programs that you don't use to save space, you could possibly stop any unnecessary services in the administrator tools in control panel, msconfig in Run: to stop startup programs and apps and you can also stop services from there also. You have to be careful when playing around with services and stratup apps, you may just muck something up. If you don't know what the service or app does - leave it alone. I would recommend downloading CCleaner. A very useful program. Simple and easy. | ChazTheGeek (16619)
| 1291062 | 2012-07-29 23:19:00 | Thanks Chaz. I am still an XP man (and not impressed so far by W8.) I do use CCleaner, but when I get among the admin tools, and even start-up programs ans services, some of them have such vague names who knows what they do. One valuable lesson I have learned is to always use an uninstaller such as Revo to remove unwanted programs, as a lot of rubbish can be left behind sometimes. I feel there is a need though for something which will remove registry and general file 'sludge' which must cause a lot of operating problems. The only other solution seems to be a complete reinstall which creates another set of problems as we all accumulate little this-es and thats which we feel we can't do without. Computers sure ain't perfect yet! |

With the start up programs, if you look at the locations of them in msconfig it may give you a clue on what it does. If you want auto defrags use IObit Smart Defrag 2. You can set it to defrag when ever you want to or when CPU usage goes below a certain percentage that you have specified. Lots of options there. PC World even recommend it. | ChazTheGeek (16619)
