2012-07-26 13:15:00 | Hi Team I was doing a little maintenance before heading for an early night (yeah right!) and updated Spybot & MWB, then Updated CCleaner as well. Not thinking, I rushed through the final series of yes clicks, then as the screen vanished I saw "Chrome" mentioned. Sure enough, it had dowloaded and installed, but I went to Add-Remove and got rid of it. After that I couldn't go on line. Fired up the old laptop and that complained and wouldn't boot, so I shot upstairs and checked Billy Jnr's computer and that was OK. Came back down after 20min or so and the laptop had finally booted but only the LHS of the keyboard was working. Must have been a dead flat battery that was dragging the PSU down because I left it for a while to get some juice in the battery then rebooted and it came up ok including the keyboard. I'm using it now. Back to the main problem, is there any chance that the brief excursion with Chrome could have stuffed my internet settings? According to the tray icon I have a connection and the refresh/repair works OK too, but it doesnt find any websites. Where to look next please? I'm buggered and off to bed, Mrs T is poorly (severe back pain, specialist this afternoon was not too helpful, being very cautious in what he would say) and she is not very happy with me at present for some unfathomable reason that only wives understand. Bad keyboard lag too, makes typing difficult! Not a happy night here in Chez Billy I'm afraid. Cheers Billy 8-{) :(

2012-07-26 22:17:00 | Well, the problem remains this morning, my connection is OK from the router onwards for two other computers sharing the connection via an ethernet switch, but my computer doesn't connect. To be frank, it is so long since I had to wander though these regions I'm at a loss to know where to look first! I recall I used to Ping various stages of the connection to see if they responded but that was years ago now. From memory this comp just ran when first plugged in! Any pointers /checks would be appreciated. Cheers Billy 8-{) :(

2012-07-26 23:01:00 | So far I think I have established that the hardware side of things is OK (see attached dianostics) and the switch/modem are doing their thing on three other conputers, but I'm scratching my head when it comes to locating the items you mention Speedy. I do have a fat XP Resource book to wade through, but it is more use as a mat for my coffee mug as it gets way too esoteric for an occasional bungler like me. I'll go looking for what you have suggested Speedy, but if you can aim me at an entry point please, that may save some time and a lot of bad language! Cheers Billy 8-{) Where do I find ivp4? Another thought: Any chance it is being blocked by Windows Firewall?

2012-07-26 23:27:00 | Fixed it! :clap F@#$ing Chrome had set itself as the default browser before I even had a chance to see it. :badpc: Jeez I hate stealth installations that don't require so much as a nod before screwing you around; and lack the courtesy to add an "Are you sure? button. That is Chrome off my Christmas card list for ever! I'm particularly pissed because Mrs T got the bad news on one medical front last night (not life threatening) and is scheduled for an OP this afternoon for another matter. It is only day surgery but I'd have liked to spend more time with her last night and this morning instead of chasing obscure computer problems. Cheers Billy 8-{)

2012-07-27 00:08:00 | As said before, turn off updates - cause more trouble than they are worth. Had to fix a friends comp that also installed chrome during an Avast update. Pain in the proverbial. | Peter H (220) | |

Sure enough, it had dowloaded and installed, but I went to Add-Remove and got rid of it . Some of those programs have the box ticked to install chrome or a toolbar by default ( one of the oldest tricks in the book) as they know people just click next, next etc . So unless a person unticks the box its doing exactly what its being told to do . |

2012-07-27 01:48:00 | You used to be able to download ccleaner slim which had no tool bar, just looked under the builds tab on there site and the slim version has been removed | gary67 (56) | |
2012-07-27 02:57:00 | As said before, turn off updates - cause more trouble than they are worth. Had to fix a friends comp that also installed chrome during an Avast update. Pain in the proverbial. I don't have any auto-updates turned on except MSE, I prefer to run updates manually, which if nothing else, prevents random reboots when I haven't saved my work for a while. I had just finished work a little early because I was going cross-eyed from drawing up a site schematic in Publisher, so I updated Spybot & MWB, then decided to update CCleaner as well. I didn't spot the Chrome tickbox, and it was all downhill from there. The annoying bit is that I knew about the Chrome 'offer' from previous updates and I guess I had a brain-fart. If I didn't have a forgiving nature (yeah right!) I might have thought that the @rseholes did it on purpose to punish anybody who uninstalled their browser. Cheers Billy 8-{) :stare:

2012-07-27 02:59:00 | In spite of trying to be careful, I had Chrome install a few months ago as well. I hate those sneaky tricks, too. In my case, after uninstalling Chrome, the http links in my email failed to work. That really adds insult to injury when an outfit like Google has their software mess your system up. Hope all goes well for Mrs Billy.
