| 1267394 | 2012-03-29 08:07:00 | Have got a defy, not the defy+. Have found it pretty sluggish and it seems to freeze a lot - still has Motoblur on it. Is it worth upgrading to a more recent version of android (currently on 2.2 I think). If I do upgrade, if and when I do will I lose all the data (numbers etc) when I root it ? Cheers |

| 1267395 | 2012-03-29 08:20:00 | If you're flashing non-standard firmware, then almost definitely you'll lose your stuff. Thankfully it ought to be set to sync with your Google account so you shouldn't lose any numbers. Pictures should be on a separate partition so should be fine. What version are you running currently? IIRC miuiandroid.com does a Defy build? 2.3! |

| 1267397 | 2012-03-29 18:09:00 | Others have suggested that replacing the Launcher helps. Are there any further official upgrades for it higher than 2.2? I know that the official 2.3 over at MIUI works good, helped an old workmate get setup and run it. Pretty sure they're working on an ICS build too if you're really keen ;) I'd suggest trying a replacement Launcher such as ADW Launcher from the Play Store first. |

I think 2.2 is as high as they are "officially" taking it - which to be honest is a bit disappointing for a phone that's only been out in NZ for 12 months or so. I use go launcher which i like the operation and feel of, but it still locks up a fair bit. |

| 1267399 | 2012-03-29 20:36:00 | If you're keen, why not give it a try upgrading to MIUI Gingerbread which is relatively stable. You'd obviously have to do a full wipe going from an official to an unofficial release, but it's not the end of the world really :) | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||

While it's disappointing that many fairly recent phones don't get the latest upgrades to the OS, there are a number of reasons for this, despite their 'newness' to the NZ market: The phone may not be particularly new from a 'world launch' point of view - historically, NZ has been the last to get a manufacturer's new hardware, although this seems to be changing recently The phone may not have been a particularly successful seller - for whatever reason - in the world market, and therefore, financially not worthwhile for the manufacturer to continue to develop for The phone may not have a high enough spec to support a new version of the OS This last option I suspect covers a large number of Android phones in the NZ market. The trick is to NOT buy what you think is a smartphone, just because it says "smartphone" on the marketing bumf. Like computers, the electronics that run the machine and memory capacity are far more important than the shiny paper with the pretty pictures exhorting you to buy THIS phone.... Price is also an indicator of longevity for cellphones (generally speaking), so when you buy cheap (and at around $400, I would almost lump the Defy in this category), you get what you pay for. The 2.2 OS works just fine, although it lacks a few features that 2.3 has, but from a usability point of view, you still have a working smartphone. That said, the Defy is a nice phone - the Defy is one of the few ruggedised smartphones available - possibly spoiled by the presence of Motoblur, much as HTC phones are spoiled by SenseUI, which is great when it works, but seems to interefere with the workings of the OS. And there is always the option of finding and installing a different ROM (MIUI or Cyanogen atc) |

Back in July of last year I would not class this as a cheap phone at $800-900 would you ? They may be now but back then definatley not - for example the galaxy was also the same price then but now is half that price (for V1 anyway) |

But it looks like the Defy has suffered more... So perhaps it falls into the category of "not successful enough" and "under-specced" (for OS upgrades)... |
