37159 2002-02-26 07:19:00 Hi a bud of mines computers having trouble starting up on WinXP. During start up the screen goes black and states
'Config/Sys is either corrupt or not working press 'R' to repair...etc'

So following suit we press 'R' and the system shuts down abruptly and restarts going through the whole thing all over again to no avail.

Anyone got any ideas to fix this? As this was installed over the top of Win ME edition a few months back
and no start up Disk was created (let alone requested during upgrade).

I'm thinking a total system rollback to the Win ME and then installing XP again, only we need to actually get into windows to do this, or would a copy of my own Win XP startup disk work? only my settings would be different.

37160 2002-02-26 12:07:00 Delete both config.sys and autoexec.bat... In windows then should not be used...
If you reinstall xp, do a clean install, never reinstall over the top of another version as it often stuffs up...

37161 2002-02-26 23:18:00 Thanks for that, I gave the config & autobat a burl but it's still doing the same thing.

I banged in another HD (..and power unit after it popped...ears where ring'n but man that was fun =P, just lucky it didn't spike my buds entire system) and installed 98 and may try to re-install XP on the now slave drive (the drive that's playing up)later, as the original main HD can't even get into Windows. I've scanned the HD and it found no probs (both Software & Harware). However I've also tried every option under 'F8' from safe mode to debug etc..(to throwing fuel on and lighting her up...burn baby burn =P) and each time the system just loops by restarting again before it gets anywhere near windows.

If possible I want to keep all the setting on the HD (i.e internet,e-mails, passwords, cookies etc..)

Anymore idea outside of a clean install?

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers troops,

Daniel

37163 2002-02-28 10:12:00 i have had this problem and have found just rebooting normally fixs it.
however starting in safemode and then restarting has also worked.
also on one occasion (not related to this problem)to replace missing files i did re-install xp over top of existing with no problems, but it was stressful.
