37099 2002-02-26 02:02:00 I am running Mandrake linux 8.1 on
K6-2-500Mz processor
256Mb ram
500Mb swap partition
The system was easy to install and apps run well
BUT!

After running various applications the system sometimes slows to a crawl.
Memory info tool reports an ever increasing cached memory - anything up to 220Mb with only 3-4 Mb free memory left. Closing applications does not reduce cache size. Even after closing all applications including X-windows,
cat/proc/meminfo shows cached memory still at the same level. The only way I have of resetting this is to reboot.
Is there any way of (1)limiting the cached memory size or (2)forcing it to free memory?

37100 2002-02-26 03:55:00 If you've still got free memory there should not be a problem. How much swap space is being used?

Open a terminal window and run 'top' in it. That will give you a better idea of what is going on.
