| 36986 | 2002-02-25 07:58:00 | Hi people, Yes I am back but not for long... I'm just taking a little rest from my work. Sorry to say, but I'm going to ask a question before I even help answer any... Hope you won't mind... Its great to see so many new comers but where are the olds? K O etc. seems to not post as much. Welcome to all new people, good to see you with so much challenging questions... I haven't even been able to answer one from what I've been reading. Anyway, my question is below, all I need is some suggestions from probably ADSL users. I know you might think I can work it out, but I just need some suggestion. At the moment, I have only one line, so I cannot use the phone at the same time as Internet, so I would like ADSL. Speed does not however matter because I only use Internet to 'see stuff'. Mostly text, quite a bit of graphics, but I do download a lot (including normal web browsering stuff). I need a solution... should I start with JetStart, how?s the service? How much will it cost me (excluding modem). At the moment I understand I need a ADSL modem + installation fee ($178) + monthly charges. With regards to the monthly charges, is it just a normal dial up connection and an ADSL connection joined together i.e. dial up + $30. I want to be with either Xtra or World Net by the way, are they good at these things? I also hope to share the connection around so would I need to network my computers or get a router then? Or can I still just connect normally and have to computers going at the same time on one line? Could somebody perhaps tell me the price I would expect to get it up and running? In regards to modem I know roughly which ones for routers but still don?t know for plain, normal ADSL modems. Would external be better/faster? Which models would you recommend? Looking forward to your suggestions, Many thanks. |

JetStart with WorldNet will cost $59.95 per month. There will be a WorldNet joining fee of $40 if you are not already a customer. Nokia M1122 is considered to be the best ADSL router but costs around $650, it has a built in 4 port ethernet hub. A Nokia Ni500 can be found for around $330. An external would be a lot better from what I hear. Your telephone exchange may not support JetStart connections go to www.telecom.co.nz to check whether you can get it or not. Why do you have your heart set on Xtra or WorldNet. Good luck with getting JetStart, JM |

And of course Jetstart has to be availble in your area About 179.00 for installation, plus about 69.00 on your phone account per month which breaks down about half each for xtra and '2nd line' If you want to free up the phone line but speed is not critical spend the money installing a second phone line and pay the 30 odd a month for it. |
