37350 2002-02-27 20:17:00 Can anyone tell me how to stop my computer making phone calls automatically. I recently discovered a toll charge to Diego Garcia (246-1122) which I certainly did not make.
Clear tells me that this is a well known scam that some sites can drop software into the computer to make it dial up certain numbers.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had this problem and can offer a solution to clean my computer of this dial-up program.

37351 2002-02-27 20:47:00 Ok, there is going to be dialler software located on your computer. Assuming you are using win98 start by going to My Computer then Dialup networking, remove everything except your isp dialer from here. Next go to My computer and have a look in c:/ look for any folders that have names that look dodgy of include the word dialer. Go into the program files directory and do the same. If a file will not let you delete it, go to Start -> Run and type msconfig. Under the startup tab look for anything that looks out of place untick it and then restart. Now delete the file. This should sort it out. Guest (0)

Not nice. Good reason for turning off the PC when not in use.

If it calls Jerry Garcia or Diego Maradonna, can you ask for an autograph for me?

37353 2002-02-28 03:49:00 You could require Clear to route any overseas calls made by your computer through the special lines reserved for 111 calls. That should stop them. ;<) Guest (0)

Seriously tho, friends down the road had similar problem & got their phone setup so they have to put in a pin number before making toll calls, downside is that Telecom charge about $2 per month for this service.
