37245 2002-02-27 01:05:00 I'm Win 98
I uninstalled a demo (CAshworks), which comnpleted OK, but in teh process it's wiped out all teh applications from the Control Panel / Add/Remove list. And all Ms Office 2000 applications start then say 'not installed - re-install'

I'm loath to go through all that. Is there any way I can get the 'list back' ??

37246 2002-02-27 03:06:00 Unfortunatly it seems to happen quite often, even with mainstream programmes.

If it happened less than 5 days ago then windows will have a backup of your registry with the add/remove list present.

To restore it (hit the view link above to see the lines unmangled):

Choose Shutdown, Restart in DOS Mode.

You can either restore it the easy but imperfect way (it restores all settings etc) by typing:

SCANREG /RESTORE

And choosing a backup dated before the day you uninstalled the offending program and follow the prompts.

Or follow these steps if you don't want everything restored:

At the prompt do the following (commands in CAPS):

CD \WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP

DIR RB???.CAB

-- From the list choose the most recent file, but from before the program was uninstalled, eg rb005.cab. Just choose the oldest if you haven't been (un)installing much recently.

EXTRACT RB005.CAB SYSTEM.DAT

REGEDIT /L:.\SYSTEM.DAT /E BOB.REG HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURR ENTVERSION\UNISTALL\ (all on one line)

MORE BOB.REG

--- More displays the contents of the file, scroll down it and look for names of programs that were previously in the add/remove list.

If they are missing type:

DEL BOB.REG

And go back to the 'DIR *.CAB' step and choose an older backup. Otherwise press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to reboot into windows.

In windows open a MS-DOS Prompt and type:

CD \WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP

REGEDIT BOB.REG

Hit yes if it prompts you with an 'Are you sure...'

Then

DEL BOB.REG

ATTRIB -S -H -R C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP\SYSTEM.DAT

DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP\SYSTEM.DAT

Your add/remove entries should be now restored (you may need to reboot to get them to show up).
