37188 2002-02-26 11:15:00 A friend of mine is trying to use FTP to upload to a webpage, it doesn't seem to be working and the page says FORBIDDEN when anyone surfs to it. How does one make a page forbidden and more importantly, how do u stop it being that way?

Smart FTP on a paradise web page if that means anything.

37189 2002-02-26 12:01:00 Are you pointing your browser at a specific html page or the directory?

If you point your webbrowser at a directory, ie 'www.myswebsite.com the browser will attempt to load a standard default page. I cant remember the exact search order, but it attempts index.htm, default.htm, and the same pages with .html, .asp and probably some others. If there is none of these files in the directory, it will return the Forbidden error msg you are recieving.

Solution: Ensure you have a page called index.htm or index.html etc contained in your directory.

37190 2002-02-26 13:08:00 Make sure the site is activated for viewing - you'll need to phone the ISP for this. When we put our webpage online we had ftp access to get it all up, but nobody had web access to the actual site until it had been activated. Guest (0)
37191 2002-02-27 00:14:00 The FTP server used to upload/download data is totally independent of the Web server.

The FTP server will not allow access to any directory without being told to by its owner. The access can be set to none, read or write, or both, free to the world, 'anonymous', or to a user with name/password.

To let your friend use FTP to set up a web site, the service provider will have given instructions.
