37192 2002-02-26 10:51:00 I have tried to update from IE5.5 to IE6. Each time I get an incomplete setup error. My system now tells me (via Help - about...) that I still have IE5.5 and outlook 5.5 BUT under add/remove programs they are listed both as version 6. I have also looked at the properties of INETCPL.CPL and the version is also listed as 5.50.4134.100.

A bit of previous history - orginally had IE6/outlook express 6 but had to have the system remastered. IE6/xpress6 was added back on from an IDG cd but caused a big error so the system was refreshed a couple days later. It was left with IE5.5/xpress 5.5 again. Went off to Microsoft site and downloaded version 6. When watching the dialog installation box I can see the files named but they show 0% extracted. I now continually get incomplete setup messages not matter how many times I re-run setup :-(

What I have already tried: disabled any applications (Nortons)during setup; big search of Microsoft database with nothing on windows ME and this particular problem; emailed company that did the system remaster/refresh but no reply; used add/remove programs on IE6 but got a RUNDLL error of error in setupwbv.dll with also missing entry of IE6Maintenance; will shortly try the gin bottle!!

This is very frustrating and any advice would be most appreciated. If registry edit is required, be warned this is a newbie at the keyboard.

Cheers - Jen

SYSTEM: Windows ME with a hybrid browers/outlook express :-)

37193 2002-02-26 12:41:00 You have just described more or less the same problem I encountered on a computer just a week ago, lady had ie/oe6, she was having some problems with a program and some bright spark called a computer tech told her to reinstall windows, what a mess afterwards, oe6 was left but some of the stationary was unavailable, you could not insert, some items would not attach, her ie6 reverted back to 5, some updates would apply, others would download but not apply or cause problems on the restart, unable to upgrade back to 6....the list goes on.

In the end she backed up everything and I reformatted and reinstalled, applied latest updates, etc, runs like a charm now.

While a reformat and reinstall is a drastic step, it might be worth considering with the benefit of having complete updates etc.

37194 2002-02-28 23:24:00 Just leave IE alone and get a real browser at http://www.opera.com

All problems gone!

37195 2002-03-01 05:50:00 Thanks Bill!

Unfortunately I am quite fond of my IE browser and I still need Outlook express for my emails.

I am going to try and edit the registry to remove all traces of IE6 and then refresh the system (again). I am still waiting to pluck up the courage to do this and holding onto the slim hope that somebody has an easier fix for me :-)

37196 2002-03-03 10:01:00 ME eh! first disable system restore.

Right click My Computer>Properties>Performance>File System
disable system restore tick box

Then try running windows update.

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Does it die or does it recommend some critical updates?

If it dies delete C:\Program Files\Windows Update folder
delete C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer folder
re-run ie6setup

37197 2002-03-04 06:01:00 Thanks for the suggestion r c. It wouldn't let me delete the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer folder - said it was in use even though it wasn't. I disabled system restore and deleted the Window Update folder anyway and tried to re-run ie6setup but it is still a no-go :-(

It's being a bit of a pain in the butt actually.

Advice appreciated anyway.

37198 2004-02-22 05:05:00 Hi Jen,

I'm reading your emails of a year ago regarding the IE6 setup problems. I've been experiencing exactly the same problem but never seem to find the time to solve it. I'm just wondering if you ever did solve it and if so, how?

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.

If I recall correctly I think I did a complete reformat of the System (and not a "refresh" using the recovery CD). These days I would of gone hunting through the registry for the offending entries and tried that instead.

37200 2004-02-22 06:01:00 A fresh install and then install IE 6 before any other apps is the way to go. Updating IE 5.x can cause LOTs of probs as you found out. mark.p (383)
37201 2004-02-22 06:04:00 lyndahull........you might be better off with a new thread on this.

couple things here......make sure the copy of IE you are installing is not damaged. also removing IE alltogether then reinstalling may work.
