2002-02-28 02:40:00 | 4 out of 10 times I shutdown the computer in the normal way, I will get the 'win98 splash screen shutting down etc' and then the comp hangs and will do nothing. I have to reboot and go thru scandisk etc for not shutting down in the normal way, except I did shut down the normalway. I am running win98 on a pIII 667 . does anyone have any ideas why it does this?, and is there a fix?. many thanks in advance... gary

2002-02-28 03:43:00 | Gary, See: www.microsoft.com downloads/contents/WURecommended/ S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/ This is the most common fix.. if it doesn't help go to microsoft.com and search for 'shut down' there are various other articles there.

2002-02-28 03:51:00 | There are quite a few causes of Win98 hanging on shut down, including a program not closing properly, (I find Cookie Crusher does this to me if I shut down too quickly and it hasnt had a chance to close when coming out of IE), hardware conflicts, BIOS problems, IRQ Steering. I think first of all check that there are no conflicts in Device Manager, then run msconfig and disable nearly all the programs at start-up. If that cures the problem, re-instate programs one by one until the problem re-occurs. Then try uninstalling and re-installing that program. Another thing to try is to disable IRQ steering. You get to this from control panel- system-device manager- system devices-pci bus-irq steering. If the problem goes away, try checking BIOS settings. The problem with this is that you could then get IRQ conflicts. Also check to see if there is a BIOS update for your machine, and what the update is meant to do. Some anti-virus programs can cause problems if they try to scan the floppy drive. There may not be an easy solution.

2002-02-28 11:38:00 | Spyware sometimes does this after you've been on the internet. I had to clean out my uncle's computer today because he had gator and a lot more running. I used the Adaware from Lavasoft. It found all the unknown programs and cleaned them for me. I don't know the link but searching in google should find it.

2002-03-02 23:08:00 | thanks to everyone for all the advice. I have noted it all and am starting with the easiest (remove spyware before shutting down) if that doesnt work Ill try the next one. So far it shutsdown ok after removing spyware with ad aware. Time will tell, but so far so good. | Guest (0) | |
