37680 2002-03-03 06:08:00 I brought a new computer 8 months ago and didn't get any copies of pre-installed software on CD - apart from a 'recovery floppy disc'

I am a bit worried about how I am going to get on for re-installing Windows ME, if my hard drive decides to expire

How will I be able to reinstall Windows ME on a new hard drive from the floppy, or will I have to buy a whole new Windows OS.

I have been emailing backwards and forwards with the manufacturer of my computer for the last month, but it's just going round in circles.

What are my rights?

Regards, CHARLIE

37681 2002-03-03 08:01:00 Yep, that's no good and you assume correctly. You need a OS on CD ROM to do an install, the floppy will allow you to start if you have problems with the HDD starting.

I would of thought they would of supplied at least a recovery CD, to install drivers and OS.

37682 2002-03-03 09:09:00 A month!

Tell us who manufactured your computer and I bet you have an installation CD by the end of the week.

No joy after a month is ridiculous. Of course you are entitled to a CD containing your Operating System.

The rules are, one operating system per computer, unless you have paid for a multi license installation for however many machines. (not applicable in you case) So the manufacturer must supply you with the OS that is registered to your machine.

If he does not, he is up to something dodgy.
Ring him tomorrow and demand to know what the story is and if he is not forthcoming tell him you are going to ring the Consumers Institute, Microsoft Licensing to check the serial no. and starting a small claims action.

Get right up them!
