| 38008 | 2002-03-05 13:32:00 | My wife's HP-6615 will start for about 10-15 secs - green light comes on - fan turns - then nothing. This happens 12 out of 15 attempts - other times it loads ok. Looking back on previous postings - some suggest power supply - others age of machine (usually 486's). Could it be power supply here? The comp. is only 18-24 months old and has given trouble free - until now. I'm not big on hardware - any help appreciated. b.w. |

| 38009 | 2002-03-05 20:54:00 | bw, does the computer stay running, or does it turn itself off after those 10-15 seconds? The age of the machine *shouldn't* have anything to do with it, in respect to it just being old, however there are some things that will die with age (eg battery). However your computer isn't old, so we should be able to rule that out. I would hazard a guess to say that it isn't your Power supply, unless you're having it shut down on you - if it stays running then I suspect that the PSU isn't the problem. Also you get it running occasionally. Those 1 out of 5 times that it does work, what time of day does it usually happen, and has the computer been tried earlier etc.? I have a computer which is doing roughly the same thing (except I do get error messages on screen) that it won't start up usually, but sometimes it does (and those sometimes is when its in the shop getting fixed so that it's returned 'without fault'). The problem with my computer is with the motherboard, probably the system BIOS; my computer is not even 12 months old yet (and so I can get it fixed for nothing as its still under warranty). That said, we might just have to wait for more replies to help :) Mike. |

| 38010 | 2002-03-07 14:21:00 | Mike: thanks - more info: -computer can stay running for extended length of time (once up to 30 min). -no signal being sent to screen. -no activity on Hard Drive. -differing times of day = usually same result now -I agree with possibly BIOS as it seems to start that process but not end it -will take it to technician next week thanks for you comments cheers b.w. |
