38171 2002-03-07 01:41:00 Can anyone advise me if it is possible to transfer audio tape contents to either a harddrive or to a cd? If so how do you do it. Many thanks . Guest (0)
38172 2002-03-07 03:59:00 Yes it is possible. It is a bit of a slow process though.
You will need a soundcard with a line-in socket. (most of them do) Also a 3&1/2mm to 3&1/2mm stereo cable to go from the tape deck to the soundcard. You can use a portable tape deck with a
headphone socket. You will also need a program on your PC to record the sound. I use a shareware program called 'CD Wave' www.cdwave.com. (There is pretty good help with this program online).
Once you have everything connected you then have to play around with the volume on the tapedeck to get it as loud as possible without clipping/distortion.
Then start recording!
Once you have done the recording you will have one big wav file which you can split into seperate files for each song etc. Then you can record straight onto a CD if you have a CD-writer or convert them into MP3's which is a good idea if you want to leave them on your HDD as the wav files are quite big!
Hope this helps!

38174 2002-03-07 13:33:00 Hi Henry,

Posted a similar response to the thread earlier about vinyl to CD. I transfer any media to CD (Cassette, vinyl, DAT, reel to reel etc) 5 days a week in my studio. Can be done on a PC but the results will vary. It's all very well recording to hard disk and then burning a CD of it but you will end up with a CD that sounds exactly like the cassette does, noisy and full of hiss.
I have special software and outboard processing units that 'clean up' the audio before cutting to disc, to produce a better sound than what the cassette can provide.
It depends a lot though on the quality of the cassette recording, if it is really lousy then no amount of electronics or editing will give you a clean sound, but in general I manage to produce good quality recordings.
If you are interested, leave me a message here with details on how to contact you.
