38108 2002-03-06 08:55:00 I have a new Compaq PC running ME. Lately it has been repeatedly freezing in whatever programme is running at the time. I have run scan disc's, virus checks etc-to no avail.
When this happens I cannot re-boot or do anything apart from switch the machine off at the wall. On start-up, as the scan disc starts checking for errors, it will often freeze again!
What can I do?

38109 2002-03-06 10:35:00 Just thinking out loud.

If its new it would sound like a hardware problem. More than likely a faulty stick of RAM. I would contact your supplier and get it checked.

On the other hand it may be a programme you have recently installed. You may wish to go thru each programme you have installed one by one uninstal them to see if the problem goes away.

And lastly it may also be a device drive conflict. Though if it is NEW they should have all the correct drivers. Unless you have updated them recently and installed the wrong ones.

I hope my ramblings are of some enlightenment.

Good luck

38110 2002-03-06 20:00:00 Hi Jill.
I saw your post and was interested to see that I was not the only person with this 'freezing' occouring with Windows ME. I also run a Compaq (Amada E500. I'm starting to wonder if it has something do do with the new Compaq drivers because it has only just started happening to me after I updated several drivers off their website. I've been running ME since it's release and never had any problems before. The 'freeze' I experience releases after about 10 seconds. But also occours in any program that may be running. Sorry I can't offer a solution because I know how frustrating this can be.

38111 2002-03-07 04:16:00 If your computer is freezing then coming back after 10 seconds then its not really freezing. What more likely is happening is that you application has maxed out it's resourses(RAM etc) and is waiting for some more. Or the link to the resourses (drivers,DLL's) are malfunctioning and therefore not working as efficient. Or your hard-drive and it's controllers are malfunctioning and taking a while for the information to get from A to B. Guest (0)
