38163 2002-03-07 00:09:00 What chipset is the fastest AMD 266A or the AMD 761 and what are the features of each? Guest (0)
38164 2002-03-07 00:31:00 I'm probably gonna be proved wrong, but I have a feeling that the 761 is the older chipset, and I suspect that the 266 is the newer one used in the Athlon XPs (I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, so I'm probably wrong, but I've got an older Athlon, and that's running on a 761). 38165 2002-03-07 01:03:00 It appears from www.amd.com that 761 is for Athlon and 266 is for Duron?? Guest (0)
38166 2002-03-07 03:10:00 The best and most popular chipset for the AMD at the moment would be the Via KT266A. Which is for Socket A AMD processors with DDR RAM.

38167 2002-03-07 05:14:00 Hi,

JM is right there, KT266A is for Athlons and Durons with DDR.

Don't tell me that you can't get a duron with DDR, you can!

But no-one would ever build one, because they're a bit of a waste of time... The Ram in question is PC1600, as opposed to PC2100, 2400 and 2700 DDR for Athlons.

The 761 is indeed older, but it tends to be known as the old chunky, super stable chipset. I couldn't really give a good opinion on one, as I've never used a machine with the 761 myself.

38168 2002-03-07 09:13:00 at the moment the kt266a chipset is the fastest chipset for atho's/duron's. however you have to put up with via's bugs.

the amd761 is an oldy, still a goodie but amd is stopping production. the other main draw back is the highest speed cpu is an XP1900. for lesser speed cpu's they are still a good stable chipset.
