Microsoft has threatened that it could be forced to yank if all it's copies of Windows XP and 2000 if it was forced to agree to terms being put forward in the Microsoft antitrust case. The demands state that they must make two different versions of the OS that would include or exclude some of its key components, including Internet Explorer web browser. Here's a snip:
Microsoft Corp. plans to argue in court hearings next week that if antitrust sanctions sought by state prosecutors are granted, the company would be forced to pull its latest Windows computer operating systems off the market and be unable to develop new systems.<www.newsbytes.com

For those wondering where all the XP Powertoys have gone, wonder no more. Microsoft has removed the PowerToys because they allowed Windows XP Home edition to connect to a domain, where that was supposed to be a specific feature of the professional version. The story over at the Dutch ZDNet site explains how to execute this neat little trick to get a little more added functionality out of your XP Home installation.<techupdate.zdnet.de

It has been found that hackers can run anything on your Windows with command written in HTML. The trick works on Internet Explorer and Outlook even if active scripting and ActiveX are disabled. A demonstration script is available. It starts the calculator out of an HTML file. Microsoft has said they will patch the hole, but in the meantime, a workaround is available here. The only side-effect is the workaround will cause IE to launch a security warning that can not be turned off.<www.theregister.co.uk

WinRAR version 3.0 beta 4 is out for download. The new beta features the following stuff:
Speed of recovery volume based reconstructing is increased.
WinRAR attempts to pre-allocate disk space for each unpacking file before starting extraction. It allows to reduce disk fragmentation if other programs also write data to disk.
Option 'Put each file to separate archive' now works like as in WinRAR 2.9 context menu. For every selected folder WinRAR creates one separate archive contained all files from that folder.
Bugfix: Minor correction in the shell extension - more appropriate extraction path for archive names like arcname123.456.rar;
Bugfix: 'Test archived files' option of archiving dialog did not work for ZIP archives;
Bugfix: Beta 3 compressed small text files worse than previous beta versions;
Bugfix: File information dialog could display a wrong cluster size for disks larger 2 GB in Windows 98 and Me;
Bugfix: Sometimes RAR could erroneously report 'CRC error' and refuse to update a completely correct RAR 3.0 solid archive.

in case you didn't see the other couple of posts, DivX 5.0 has been released including version 2.0.0.a.9 Alpha of the DivX Playa. Version 5 comes in two flavours, standard and Pro. Here's what's new:
Compatibility with all versions of DivX video content. DivX 5.0 can play every version of DivX video ever created, from prior to 3.11 alpha to the brand new DivX Pro 5.0.
AMD optimizations. Version 5.0 is fully optimized for AMD Athlon and Athlon XP processors.
Faster two-pass encoding. The second pass of two-pass encoding is now up to 30% faster than DivX 4.12. The second pass makes use of motion vector information calculated by the first pass.
Smaller file sizes. DivX 5.0 is capable of producing equivalent visual quality at up to 15-20% smaller file sizes, when compared to DivX 4.12. File size savings will vary depending upon the nature of the video content.

If your into tweaking and fiddling with programs and Operating Systems then you might want to check out this hack at OverclockersClub.com. This is a How-to guide this time for Disabling Microsoft's System File Checker in Windows XP. Here's a bit from the guide:
Why you would want to disable the System File Checker? 1. It takes away from performance. Not much but those that are hardcore go after every performance tweak they can get. 2. To delete and modify any file or folder on your system. System File Checker protects a lot of junk on your hard drive. Like the Tour folder that holds the files from the 'Welcome To Windows Tour' that nobody cares about. 3. To free up some extra space. System File Checker itself creates a lot of files which can gobble up hard drive space.<www.overclockersclub.com

38088 2002-03-06 09:36:00 Loved the Dutch site tweak`e, but pity I can't read the lingo. The car in the pix answers Erin's comment about what happens when you turn MS loose on vehicles. Looked like an uberclocked Trabant somebody upgraded to ME!
