Hi all, my husband has just dropped my laptop in to be checked over. The stupid thing will not fire up. When I press the start up button it seems to go straight in to hibernation and will not start. The first time it happened I googled and found others with this same problem but alas nothing has worked for mine. I think the thing that makes me really angry is, they told Michael that because its an ACER it would probably have to go to Australia as they can't really fix them here. For $30 (on top of however much its going to cost to look it over) they will copy my data off the HD. When this happened the first time I immediately copied over anything I wanted.
My question to those who do repair laptops is,.."is it standard practise to get ACER in Aus to do the repairs? or is it that they don't want to repair ACERS?
I am now considering getting a new laptop but I really, really love my Acer :(

1292690 2012-08-04 02:39:00 There are heaps of Acer partners in NZ who repair their laptops. I would think it would be very unusual for it to be sent to Oz. Your location suggests Dunedin, there are a few repairers there, or it may have to be sent to Chch. I actually think a good tech could (in most cases) be able to solve the issue right there. 1292691 2012-08-04 02:41:00 The only time the Acers usually go to Aussie is in the case of a major warranty repair (motherboard for example) . Other than that they are no different to any other laptop.

If its simply a software Issue, then obviously the people you talked to dont have a clue what they are doing, or dont want to work on Acers.

For $30 they will copy my data off the HD. Thats actually very reasonable - many places will charge you a lot more than that.

Depending on whats wrong with the laptop, they may have to remove the drive, slave it to another PC and copy data off that way ( I do it all the time), or boot it from something like an ubuntu live cd, attach a external drive and copy data over - 1st option I mentioned is easier and quicker. ;)

1292692 2012-08-04 03:21:00 Thank you for your replies :) Michael took my Laptop in to PB Technologies now called Cello I think? Can someone please recommend where I should take it to? ollieogg (6593)
1292693 2012-08-04 04:35:00 I know Dove Electronics in CHch will do motherboard replacements - normally takes a week or so for them to get one in as its often not a stock item, I've taken one or two back there over the years to be replaced.
Cello dont appear to be Acer agents, so doesnt surprise me they want to send it to Oz. Give Acer a call and see who they recommend in your area. 0800 223 769

1292694 2012-08-04 04:58:00 Might as well pay the $30 and recover the data while its in there, I'd not let it out of your hands again until this has been done. Metla (12)
1292695 2012-08-04 05:00:00 ollieogg, I have an Acer laptop and also live in Dunedin. It needed repair and at the time, mine was under warranty . It was sent by the shop from whom I purchased it to Dove Electronics, 10 Print Place Middleton, Christchurch. Ph 03 338 4722 smurf (6545)
1292696 2012-08-04 06:53:00 Yes, Dove in Ch/ch are the Acer agents. There was Dove in Akld too but they got the acer repair contract taken off them.

Although, being an Acer, I'd send it to Aussie and leave it there.
